Guys, It’s Time To Step Up This Spring With The Right Loafer
Fashion & Style Apr 12, 2018
Spring where art thou? Although warm weather seems to be in hiding, we are going to get a head start on my favourite trend of the season, loafers! The best part about leaving the cold winter, besides bringing in the warmth and leaving behind the snow, is dusting off some of those seasonal pieces. It’s time to step up this Spring with the right loafer.
This piece will take a look on how to pair your favourite loafers with some of your spring and summer looks. Loafers are a staple piece that keeps an outfit classy while adding a hint of casual. They are a piece which are versatile with a number of ways to style them. I’ve provided a guideline on different types of loafers and how they should fit into your wardrobe.
Before getting into different types of loafers, it’s important to touch on material. In deciding on materials we have to popular and classic choices: leather or suede. Both leather and suede have their own pros and cons. Leather makes for a smarter, sleeker look; you can pair them with either a full suit or tailored pants. Suede has a slightly more casual feel, making it better for a warm weather wardrobe. Leather being a stronger material has a greater longevity, while suede has a more delicate but luxurious finish. Different types of loafers come in both leather and suede options.
Types of Loafers
The Penny Loafer
A classic 80s staple, the Penny Loafer equals versatility. Due to the style of a Penny Loafer (classic design characteristic is the strip of leather or suede, across the front top part of the shoe) can be easily dressed up or down. As seen below, some popular looks do include pairing it with a full suit however, it is more commonly known to be used to add tat unique touch of class to a semi-formal or casual outfit. Penny Loafers pair well with jeans or chinos with a button up T-shirt or a casual blazer/pant combo.
When one thinks of slippers, they think comfort and convenience. Now think of a slipper and combine it with a loafer. A combination of comfort and style, the Slipper Loafer is a great alternative to other types of casual footwear. It’s sharp and comfortable with a slip-on design, slight heel and found in different materials such as leather, suede, and velvet.
These are great way to elevate casual outfits or compliment semi-formal ones. the Slipper, in comparison to other types of loafers, are usually available in a larger variety of colours and patterns and are a fun way to jazz up an outfit.
The Tassel Loafer
Another blast from the past, the Tassel Loafer is making quite the comeback! Sporting the classic tassel detail, this style of loafer may be deemed as “old school” however it does add that traditional classic style to your look. The Tassel Loafer demands a level of elegance and is definitely the most formal of the loafer options. In my opinion, due to the addition of the tassels, these loafers are a pair that you might want to add as your second or third pair of loafers in your wardrobe as they are a little less versatile and fancier than either the Penny Loafer or the Slipper.
With so many styles available, the choices can become overwhelming. The above guide and pictures should provide you with different ways of styling loafers. For a modern day take on loafers, go with slim, tapered trousers that provide and properly showcase your shoes. Now that you have the rundown on loafers, go grab yourself a pair before the season begins.
