Jewel Kats doesn’t let her hot pink crutch hold her back. She is a disability advocate, an author of eleven children’s books and a recipient of the 2013 Gold Gelett Burgess children’s book award.

After a car crash at the age of nine left her with chronic pain and low bone density in one of her legs, Kats realized her true calling — to share her experiences and empower young people with similar disabilities.

[blockquote]After sending manuscripts to several publishers to no avail, her first book, Reena’s Bollywood Dream: A Story about Sexual Abuse, was published in 2010 and she has been writing ever since.[/blockquote]

Kats also inspired writer and artist Dan Parent of Archie Comics to add Harper Lodge, Veronica Lodge’s cousin and the legendary comic’s first disabled character. Kats has two new children’s books on the way and continues to show the world that disability can be celebrated and overcome.

I had the chance to chat with Jewel just before she was honored at ANOKHI’s 12th Anniversary Event with the Crusader of the Year Award For People With Disabilities. She chatted with me about her terrifying car crash at nine years old, and how she overcame this tragic incident with confidence and courage. She also opens up about her passion and need to reach out to children and empower them through her storybooks.
